At Jaipur in 1999, during a Pepsi cup match between Pakistan and India, Left handed maestro Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi opened the innings for Pakistan, as Wasim Akram, the Pakistan captain won the toss and elected to bat first. Pakistan were off to flying start courtesy Shahid Afridi 5 fours in an over of Anil Kumble.
Shahid Afridi and Saeed Anwar are well known for giving their side a brisk start, it was same case at Jaipur where both the openers AFRIDI and Saeed Anwar didn’t miss a single opportunity to cash on against the Indian bowlers specially Agarkar. At the end of 7th over Pakistan were 49-0 and the Indian skipper bought in Anil Kumble into the attack, his most experienced bowler to change the things around for his side.
Shahid Afridi who is well-known to upset, dominate and target the bowlers from the word go had other plans, he completely demolished Anil Kumble in his opening over. Afridi took full advantage of 15 overs field restriction and hit 5 fours in an over.
Shahid Afridi 5 fours in an over (Ball by ball):
First delivery: Anil Kumble bowled a fuller length delivery on the legs and Afridi flicked it away for one bounce four over long-on area with ease and elegance. Pakistan raced to 53-0 in 7.1 overs. Afridi was on the attack straightaway.
Second delivery: Change in length from Anil Kumble, dropping it short, Afridi picked up the length early and pulled it towards the leg side for another Four. Afridi on fire!
Third delivery: Afridi taking the full advantage of the situation smashed the next delivery which was another short of the length for four, this time towards the off-side.
Three boundaries in three balls.
Fourth delivery: A dot ball, a rare dot ball of the over. A fuller length delivery on the legs and Afridi dig it down to short mid-wicket. No run – sign of relief for Kumble and India.
Fifth delivery: a lot of changes in the fielding positions, but Anil Kumble who was completely under pressure bowled a poor delivery on the leg side [this is what exactly happens when you are under attack], Afridi just helped it down the leg side for a another boundary. Afridi rocking the show while Kumble looked completely lost.
Sixth delivery: A cracking drive on the off side by Afridi, ending the over on a high. Shahid Afridi 5 fours in an over. A perfect dream over for any batting side.
Shahid Afridi hit 5 fours in an over, the over read as: 4, 4, 4, 0, 4, 4.
Throughout the over, Kumble suffered the indignity of being blasted by Shahid Afridi for five fours in his opening over, Afridi made a total mockery of Kumble’s bowling, he was taken to the cleaners as Afridi both improvised and showed his raw power.
