Pakistan Cricket Board, PCB, on Monday dissolves selection committee led by Haroon Rasheed with immediate effect. Selector Kabir Khan had already resigned from the committee earlier.
The news came hours after head coach, Waqar Younis, resigned from the job with 3 months still left in his contract. Pakistan’s T20 captain, Shahid Afridi has already stepped down from captaincy, though he wants to play on as a player.
Haroon Rasheed was appointed head of the selection committee after a sorry defeat in the World Cup, 2015. The selection came under serious criticism after it included Khurram Manzoor in the Asia Cup squad although he wasn’t picked by any franchise in the PSL and hadn’t played a T20 in Pakistan colors.
However, Manzoor was replaced with Ahmed Shehzad for the World T20, 2016. The selection committee was unable to find a steady opening pair for the T20 team.
PCB has announced that the team selected for the England tour will be sent to Abottabad for a boot camp to enhance their fitness. Waqar Younis and Intikhab Alam the team manager had given recommendations for such a camp in their report after the dismal fitness conditions of these players showed up during the WT20.
PCB is also looking forward to provide the team with a dietitian and a psychologist. While their is a lot of focus on the fitness of the players, their is going to be revamp of the domestic structure as well. PCB is trying to make sure that fewer teams will play in the competition this time, which in turn will improve the quality of cricket in the tournament.
The inquiry committee has also called for the board to make good pitches during the domestic tournaments so that their is equal contest between bat and ball. PCB has thanked the captain, coach and the members of the selection committee and has wished them well for their future endeavors.
